My name is Ishan Sengupta and I am from San Diego, California. I went to UCLA and majored in Business Economics. After graduating, I worked in the Investment Management industry as both a trader and junior analyst. After reading about all of the educational inequalities in this country, I joined Teach for America so that I could gain some first hand experience in the education field and work towards a master degree. I plan on getting an MBA as well in a few years.
I currently work as a high school and GED math teacher at ReStart Academy in Brooklyn. It is a District 79 school that serves students in a combined educational and therapeutic setting. Students at my school often deal with drug abuse, social-emotional problems. truancy, or other conduct disorders. This is my first year teaching and I've enjoyed the experience thus far. Teaching students who are trying to get back on track has a lot of upside and downside since they want to change their trajectory in life but also come from a place where hard work, respect, and self evaluation have often been minimal thus far.
